Touching story of a family of sharecroppers, from the South in the 1930s.  Their struggle for survival was punctuated by the social turmoil and poor fiscal situation of the time period..  But their love for each other prevailed during good (seldom) and bad (frequent) times.  Easy to read but definitely adult.  This is a perfect story for Middle Schoolers.  In 1972 nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted screenply.  Two identical stories with different endings.
