THE ILIAD: epic poem about the Trojan War. Man v. Man, Man v. Gods. Man v. Himself, Man v. Nature. Starting with the abduction of Helen, won as a prize between he major goddesses about Who is the most beautiful of the three?, Trojan Prince, Paris, judged the contest.; without knowing the consequences, he won Hellen from Menelaus, the king of Sparta.; After she was stolen, Menelaus drafted his brother Agamemnon to gather an army of Greek leaders and warriors to sail to troy and regain the princess and the prestige; All caused by the gods, there withe hundreds of thousand men killed during the conflict. Innocent Trojans were pulled into battle.; The gods then, chose sides and upped the slaughter total. Achilles was the best Greek fighter; Hector the best Trojan. This is all their story. Originally spoken over a week's entertainment, Homer wrote it down about 500 BC.
